Teeth Whitening Q & A

What causes teeth to become discolored?

A number of factors can cause teeth to become discolored. Most often, it is the result of foods and beverages, especially those dark in color, such as: red wine, coffee, tea, and berries. Tobacco products also cause teeth to become yellow and stained. Internal staining is caused by certain medications, illnesses, or damage to the interior of the tooth.

What teeth whitening systems does Dr. Paik offer?

Dr. Paik uses the Opalescence Boost whitening systems in his practice, and has achieved excellent results. The system entails painting the teeth with a specially-formulated whitening agent that can brighten tooth color up to 10 shades in about an hour. In addition to a whitening agent, the Opalescence Boost formula contains potassium nitrate and fluoride to strengthen tooth enamel. This offers cavity protection and reduces tooth sensitivity. Dr. Paik also offers take-home kits that contain professional grade teeth whitening gel and a custom-made mouth tray so patients can maintain their whitening effects.

Are professional teeth whitening treatments better than over-the-counter whitening kits?

Over-the-counter whitening gels and strips contain hydrogen peroxide, but in a significantly lower concentration of a maximum of 10%, making them less effective than professional whitening.

Is teeth whitening safe?

Teeth whitening is safe, according to numerous clinical studies.  The two most common side effects, which are temporary, are soft tissue irritation and hypersensitivity of the teeth. In the professional dental office setting, however, side effects can be monitored and often completely avoided.
